What is Combination Hair Transplant (FUT + FUE)?
A combination hair transplant (FUT+FUE) procedure involves the use of both, Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) techniques, in a single treatment session to enable the maximization of hair graft harvesting and coverage, especially in cases of extensive hair loss.
ALCS Clinic offers the best combination hair transplant in Jaipur under the expert care of our skilled hair transplant surgeon, Dr. Sunil Arora.
Explanation of FUT & FUE
FUT and FUE are the two primary techniques used in hair transplantation.
In the FUT hair transplant technique, a thin strip of scalp is surgically removed from the donor area, which is usually the back or sides of the head. Hair follicles are then extracted from this strip and implanted into hair-thinning or balding areas. This method may leave a linear scar but allows for the transplantation of a large number of grafts in one session.
On the other hand, the FUE technique involves the direct extraction of individual hair follicles using a tiny punch tool, leaving minimal, dot-like scars to obtain natural-looking results.
The FUE technique is less invasive, has minimal scarring, and offers faster recovery compared to the FUT hair transplant recovery time.
Why Combine FUT & FUE?
During the combination hair transplant technique, a strip of scalp is first removed from the donor area for FUT, providing a large number of grafts. Then, additional grafts are extracted individually using the FUE technique to further enhance coverage. This helps maximize graft yield in a single treatment session.
Combining the FUE FUT hair transplant techniques is generally recommended in the following cases:
- Extensive baldness
- Less number of donor hair follicles
- Progressing pattern baldness
- Demand for high-density hair transplant results
- Demand for natural-looking results despite having advanced baldness
This approach is ideal for patients with advanced hair loss, as it allows for the transplantation of a higher number of follicles while balancing density, coverage, and donor area preservation for future sessions.
The result of a combination hair transplant technique is a fuller, more natural-looking hairline with efficient use of available donor hair.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
A combination hair transplant uses both, the FUT and FUE hair transplant techniques in one session to extract a higher number of grafts. In this procedure, the FUT technique helps provide a large graft yield from a strip of scalp, and the FUE technique is then used to extract additional hair follicles individually.
This combination approach offers better density and coverage for improved results, especially for patients with advanced hair loss rather than an individual FUT or FUE technique.
An ideal candidate for a combination hair transplant is a person with extensive hair loss who requires high graft density, has a healthy donor area, is in good general health, and has realistic expectations from the procedure.
The procedure is also suitable for an individual wanting maximum coverage in a single session. The person undergoing the procedure should have sufficient scalp laxity for FUT and healthy surrounding donor areas for FUE to get the maximum benefit from the combination hair transplant technique.
Initial healing after a combination hair transplant takes approximately 10 to 14 days. Mild pain, swelling, redness, or scabbing may occur during this stage, but these symptoms usually subside within a few days and most patients can resume their daily routines after two weeks.
This is followed by a period of shedding 3 to 4 weeks after the procedure, in which the transplanted hair starts falling out as a natural part of the hair growth cycle. The hair then starts growing gradually, with noticeable results appearing at around 3 to 6 months and final results becoming visible 12 to 18 months after undergoing the procedure.
The procedure is also suitable for an individual wanting maximum coverage in a single session. The person undergoing the procedure should have sufficient scalp laxity for FUT and healthy surrounding donor areas for FUE to get the maximum benefit from the combination hair transplant technique.
Using the combination technique, up to 4,000 to 5,000 hair grafts or more can often be extracted in a single session, depending on the donor area’s quality and scalp laxity.
FUT allows for a large number of graft extractions initially, and FUE adds additional grafts for enhanced coverage, making it ideal for treating large balding areas effectively.
Yes, a person who has undergone a combination hair transplant is advised to avoid touching or washing the scalp for the first 48 hours after the procedure. Gentle cleansing is recommended afterward.
Sleeping with the head elevated, avoiding direct sunlight, and avoiding strenuous activity for at least 10 days after the procedure help prevent complications. Follow-up appointments are recommended to monitor healing and ensure proper hair growth.
