What Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is when men experience breast tissue enlargements due to the disparity between estrogen and testosterone.
When it develops in one or both breasts, the condition causes emotional distress and makes people feel self-conscious about their appearance.
This medical condition typically poses no threat to health but is a source of discomfort.
Pseudogynecomastia refers to fatty deposits around the chest. Mild gynecomastia will go away through natural recovery, but persistent cases need medical assistance.
Depending on the severity, lifestyle changes, medications, or surgery may be recommended.
Types of Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is classified based on duration, age, breast size, and tissue composition.
By duration, acute gynecomastia appears suddenly and often resolves within six months, while chronic gynecomastia persists for months or years and may require surgery.
According to age, neonatal gynecomastia occurs in newborns due to maternal hormones and fades naturally. Pubertal gynecomastia appears in teenage boys from hormonal changes and typically resolves within two years. Adult gynecomastia is common in older men, often linked to low testosterone levels.
Breast size is graded from Grade 1 (mild growth, no excess skin) to Grade 4 (large, sagging breasts resembling female breasts).
By tissue type, glandular gynecomastia involves excess glandular tissue, fatty gynecomastia (pseudo-gynecomastia) results from fat buildup, and mixed gynecomastia includes both fat and glandular tissue.
What Happens in Gynecomastia Surgery?
Gynecomastia surgery offers a permanent solution, with the surgical approach depending on the amount of fat, glandular tissue, and excess skin present.
For cases where fat is the main concern, the liposuction technique is used. Small incisions are made to insert a cannula, which suctions out the fat. This minimally invasive method results in short recovery times and minimal scarring, though it’s not effective when glandular tissue is involved.
When glandular tissue is excessive or there’s noticeable skin sagging, the excision technique is preferred. A small incision near the areola allows for tissue removal and chest reshaping. In more severe cases, extra skin may also be removed for better contour. While this method may leave minor marks, it provides clear and lasting results.
Recovery & Expected Results
Patients must wear a compression garment after surgery for multiple weeks to reduce swelling and enable proper skin retraction.
Postoperative swelling and bruising, alongside minor pain, become manageable as patients heal during the initial three weeks.
Patients can perform light activities immediately following their procedure, yet they should postpone strenuous exercise for at least one month after the surgery.

Your Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have any questions or need clarification on something? Feel free to ask, and I’ll be happy to assist!
Can Gynecomastia Return after Undergoing Surgery?
No, gynecomastia surgery is a permanent cosmetic surgery and the glandular tissue and fat removed cannot grow back after surgery.
However, the surrounding breast tissue may regrow if the patient leads an unhealthy lifestyle and put on excessive weight after the surgery.
Will a Gynecomastia Surgery be Painful?
No, the gynecomastia surgery is done under the effect of anesthesia and, therefore, the patient experiences no discomfort or pain during the surgery.
There could be some discomfort and pain for a couple of days following surgery, however, the surgeon prescribes pain-relieving medicines to relieve this pain.
When will I see the Results of Gynecomastia Surgery?
You will notice a change in your breast tissue appearance almost immediately after undergoing gynecomastia surgery. The full results of the surgery are, however, visible only after three to six months of undergoing surgery.
Can Gynecomastia be Treated Without Surgery?
Yes, gynecomastia can be treated without surgery in some cases, depending on the severity and underlying cause of the condition. In cases of gynecomastia due to hormonal changes, the condition may resolve on its own once the hormonal levels go back to normal.
Other non-surgical gynecomastia treatment options include changing diet and exercise habits, stopping or changing medications that may be causing the condition, hormonal treatments using medications, and treatment of underlying medical conditions that may be causing gynecomastia.
