How Does Rhinoplasty Work?
A rhinoplasty surgery can reshape the nose and work in the following different ways:
- Correction of bulbous, droopy, hooked, or upturned nose
- Correction of deviated nasal septum
- Open the blocked nasal passages for improved breathing
- Correction of nostrils that are too small, too large, too wide, or are turned upwards
- Removal of dips or bumps on the nose’s bridge
- Improves facial balance by making the nose bigger or smaller
What Are the Different Types of Rhinoplasty Surgeries?
Rhinoplasty surgery is mainly classified into the following two types:
- Open rhinoplasty: It involves major nose reshaping. The plastic surgeon completely separates the nose skin from the underlying bone and cartilage of the nose while performing this type of surgery.
- Closed rhinoplasty: It is a minor nose reshaping procedure that is less invasive compared to open rhinoplasty. In this procedure, incisions are created inside the nose to separate the nose skin from the underlying bone and cartilage and reshape the nose.
Using either open or closed rhinoplasty techniques, the following different types of rhinoplasty surgeries can be performed:
- Functional rhinoplasty: This type of reconstructive surgery helps restore the looks and function of the nose following a traumatic injury, cancer treatment, or disease. The procedure can also help correct a deviated nasal septum or congenital defects.
- Cosmetic rhinoplasty: The procedure is only done for cosmetic reasons, which means to make the nose look better.
- Tip plasty: This surgery focuses on reshaping just the tip of the nose.
- Revision or secondary rhinoplasty: It helps correct or revise problems that may occur after a previous rhinoplasty surgery.
- Filler or non-surgical rhinoplasty: It is a cosmetic procedure in which dermal fillers are used to temporarily fill the dips and irregularities in the nose. This procedure can help in correcting a small bump or lifting a droopy nose tip.
How to Prepare for a Rhinoplasty?
You will first need to consult a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon if you wish to undergo rhinoplasty. The surgeon will assess you properly to determine if you are a good candidate for undergoing rhinoplasty.
During the consultation appointment, the plastic surgeon will examine your nose and facial features. You will also be asked about the reasons for undergoing the procedure.
The surgeon will ask you about your medical history and any current medications that you may be taking. Photographs of your nose will also be taken by the surgeon from different angles.
Additionally, the surgeon will discuss with you your expectations from the surgery and let you know what is practically achievable in your case. You may let the surgeon know if you have any queries or concerns that you may have about the procedure.
The following preparatory steps are suggested before you undergo your scheduled rhinoplasty surgery:
- Some diagnostic tests are suggested to evaluate if you are in good general health to undergo the surgery.
- You have to stop smoking for at least 15 days before you undergo rhinoplasty surgery.
- You will be asked to stop taking blood-thinning medications like aspirin and ibuprofen a few days before undergoing surgery.
- You will be provided with instructions on what you may or may not eat and drink before rhinoplasty surgery.
What is the Procedure for Rhinoplasty Surgery?
The rhinoplasty surgery may be performed under intravenous sedation to relax you before the surgery, local anesthesia to numb the nose area, or general anesthesia to make you unconscious before the surgery.
Following anesthesia administration, the rhinoplasty procedure is performed as follows;
- The surgeon makes an incision inside of the nostrils while performing a closed rhinoplasty. For an open rhinoplasty, an incision is made across the base of the nose.
- The surgeon now raises the skin covering the bones and cartilage of the nose.
- The underlying nose bones and cartilage are now reduced, rearranged, or added to. This will help change the shape of the nose or fix a deviated septum.
- The skin covering the nose bones and cartilage will now be placed back.
- The skin is secured back in its place using sutures (stitches).
It takes roughly one to three hours to undergo a rhinoplasty surgery. ALCS Clinic offers painless and successful rhinoplasty treatment in Lucknow under the expert care of the best plastic surgeon in Lucknow.

- A packing or cotton gauze may also be placed by the surgeon inside the nose. This packing is usually removed 24 to 48 hours after undergoing rhinoplasty surgery.
- Some amount of pain, swelling, and bruising can normally be seen around the nose and eye region. It usually takes many weeks for the swelling to subside. However, some amount of facial swelling may be seen for up to one year following rhinoplasty surgery, especially during the morning.

Recovery After Rhinoplasty Surgery
Most patients are able to go home on the same day or the day after a rhinoplasty surgery and can go back to work within one or two weeks of undergoing the procedure.
However, full recovery after a rhinoplasty may take up to one year. Some amount of facial swelling is normally seen for four to six weeks after the surgery. The swelling gradually starts reducing after three months. Mild swelling may be noticed between three to twelve months after the surgery as the nose is still healing during this period.
The complete results of rhinoplasty are visible only after healing is complete, which normally takes approximately one year. However, the recovery period varies among different patients.
For optimal and quick healing of the nose, the following instructions need to be followed during the first few weeks after surgery:
- Keep the head in an elevated position while sleeping.
- Avoid any type of trauma on the face.
- Apply cold compresses (not ice) under the eyes and cheek region.
- Do not put a lot of pressure on the nose bridge while wearing eyeglasses.
- Limit sun exposure.
- Do not blow your nose.
- Take the prescribed pain-relief medications to relieve discomfort and soreness after the procedure.
- Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for about four to six weeks following surgery.

BEFORE & AFTER
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The procedure performed depends on the result that needs to be achieved. The approach could be the traditional closed approach or the new open approach. All the incisions are given inside the nostrils in the closed technique. Hence, nothing is visible on the outside. In the open technique, a small incision is made on the underside of the nose along with the incisions inside the nostrils. The incision on the underside of the nose heals very well and is not visible in the long run. The advantage of this incision is that it provides better exposure and correction under vision.
The remaining steps for the surgery depend on the procedure that is being done.
Augmentation: A procedure that helps in the treatment of a depressed nose by using implants or autografts. Autografts could be the cartilage from the septum of the nose, ears, or the ribs. It could also be the bone graft from the hips or the skull. The commonly used implants in Rhinoplasty are silicone or medpore. There are advantages and disadvantages to every material used, and one must ask their cosmetic surgeon regarding the same.
Hump removal: A hump on the nose is due to the prominence of bone and the prominence of cartilage or septum part of the nose. On the removal of the hump, the roof of the nose opens up and needs to be closed with a fracture of the nasal bones.
Broad nose: This condition can be corrected by the movement of the nasal bones inwards by fracture. The tip of the nose also needs to be narrowed down. If the nasal base is broad or flared, this can be corrected as well.
Deviated nose: The nose can become deviated during development or later due to an injury. By removal of the deviated part of the septum or by placing cartilage supports or straightening of the stitches, the deviated nose can be straightened.
Boxy nasal tip: This involves the correction of a bulbous nose tip. The cartilage forming the tip of the nose needs to be stitched tightly and reshaped to give a more proportionate tip of the nose.
- After the nasal surgery, a nasal pad may be placed below the nostrils for about 24 hours to stop fluid or blood that may trickle from the nostrils for 24 hours post the surgery.
- The surgical trauma may cause swelling of the nose lining, and the nose may feel as if it were bunged up. This may last up to 3 weeks post-surgery.
- There may be swelling and bruising of the nose post the surgery. This usually subsides between 3 to 6 weeks after surgery.
- If one has fractures, a splint is usually placed on the nasal bridge, which is removed after seven days.
- Immediately after the surgery, one may feel difficulty in opening of the eyes due to the swelling. Usually, this problem subsides on the next day of surgery.
- The wounds usually heal after 1 to 2 weeks.
- The swelling around the tip of the nose takes the longest to recover and may take about 3 months.
- The doctor and staff at the ALCS clinic will ensure that you have pleasant and comfortable post-surgical care.
