What is a Nose Job (Rhinoplasty)?
A nose job or rhinoplasty is a kind of plastic surgery done to reshape and/or resize an individual’s nose. This type of surgery may be performed to change the appearance of the nose, improve breathing ability, or both.

What to Expect from the Nose Job Procedure?
At ALCS Clinic, we follow a stepwise approach for a rhinoplasty procedure, including the following steps:
Preparation Steps
The first step involves having a consultation appointment with our expert cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Sunil Arora, who will assess your nasal and facial structure during the appointment, ask about your medical history and current medicines, ask about your goals, and discuss the treatment procedure in detail with you.
Some diagnostic tests may be suggested to assess your general health and eligibility for undergoing surgery.
You will be asked to stop smoking and avoid taking blood-thinning medications a few days before undergoing the procedure. You will also be given fasting instructions that need to be followed before arriving for the surgery.
Procedure Steps
The surgery could be done under intravenous sedation (helps you relax before the procedure), local anesthesia (numbs the treatment area), or general anesthesia (makes you unconscious).
After administering anesthesia, the following steps are performed to complete the procedure:
- An incision is either made by the surgeon inside the nostrils (for closed rhinoplasty in minor nose reshaping cases) or across the nose’s base (for open rhinoplasty in major nose reshaping cases).
- The skin covering the nose’s bone and cartilage is now raised.
- The bones and cartilage are then reduced, rearranged, or added to. This enables changing the shape of the nose or fixing a deviated nasal septum.
- The skin is now placed back in its position and secured using sutures.
The entire process takes approximately one to three hours to complete.
Post-Surgical Care
A tiny splint may be placed inside the nose and needs to be worn for one to two weeks after surgery to reduce swelling and maintain the new shape of the nose as it heals. It is normal to experience some bruising, swelling, and discomfort around the nasal and eye area after surgery.
Most people can go home on the same day or day after surgery and may resume work one to two weeks after surgery. However, complete recovery could take about one year.
The following tips can help in optimal healing after the procedure:
- Keep your head elevated while sleeping.
- Avoid any trauma on the face.
- Use cold compresses, but not ice, on the cheek and under-eye area.
- Limit direct exposure to the sun.
- Avoid blowing your nose.
- Avoid putting excessive pressure on the nose bridge while wearing eyeglasses.
- Take prescribed painkillers to relieve discomfort after the procedure.
- Avoid lifting heavy weights and strenuous exercises for 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.
- Attend follow-up appointments as suggested by your surgeon to evaluate healing and address any side effects.
