What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition of abnormal enlargement of breasts in males. Some people may even refer to it as ‘male-boobs’.
Gynecomastia is most commonly observed in young males between 20 to 30 years of age. In most cases, it is seen as an embarrassing male problem that affects the confidence of a man and leads to lower self-esteem.
It is often seen that men with gynecomastia usually avoid activities like swimming or changing their clothes in front of others due to embarrassment and the fear of being ridiculed.
Causes of Gynecomastia
There can be several causes of gynecomastia. Some of the most common causes are:
–Pubertal Male Breast Enlargement or Pubertal Gynecomastia: A hormonal imbalance between the male sex hormones (testosterone) and the female sex hormones (estrogen) can lead to enlarged breasts in males.
Most of such cases are found during adolescence years and no particular cause can be found for the same. In cases of Pubertal Gynecomastia, the hormone levels are generally found to be normal and the enlarged breast appearance may be due to the difference in the sensitivity of the circulating hormones.
–Use of Steroids: Youngsters are known to resort to all kinds of means to achieve a six-pack body and a fit physique. Most often then not they resort to taking certain nutritional supplements with steroids to quickly achieve that desired body.
These steroids lead to the inhibition of the testosterone (male sex hormone) hormone levels in the body, leading to an imbalance between the male sex hormone (testosterone) and the female sex hormone (estrogen). Due to an increase in the activity of the estrogen hormone, there is an enlargement in the size of the male breasts.
–Obesity: Obesity in males can also lead to gynecomastia. In obese people, there is an increase in the activity of certain body enzymes known as aromatase.
This enzyme causes the conversion of the testosterone (or androgen) hormones to estrogen hormones by a process known as aromatization. Since estrogen hormones are female sex hormones, they cause breast enlargement in males.
–Prolonged use of certain medications: Certain drugs like the antacids and the antiepileptic drugs when taken for a prolonged duration can lead to gynecomastia.
-Other causes of gynecomastia may include hypothyroidism, hypogonadism, and testicular tumors.
If only one male breast is involved and the lump is hard, gynecomastia may be malignant. But, this is usually a rare occurrence.
Treatment for Gynecomastia
